Peaceful Skin Timeline

Peaceful Skin Timeline

What to Expect at Each Stage
of Your Healing Journey

Every body is unique. While a lucky few may notice immediate relief, most of us will need to nurture our skin with two to four weeks of consistent care before we see a full recovery.

The Peaceful Skin Timeline below is based on daily care of your skin. If you spread out how often you use your products, then your timeline might extend longer.

Remember, the goal is to create a daily ritual of self love. (You're worth it!)

New Beginnings

Days 1–3

  • Early itch relief, many folks go from "constant distraction" to "barely noticeable"
  • Scalp feels less tight, less angry
  • First signs of peace returning to your skin
  • Inner voice says, "This might actually work."

Healing Continues

Days 4–10

  • Visible flakes calm down and shed less on clothes
  • Redness or discoloration looks less irritated and more soothed
  • Buildup begins to lift and clear away
  • Growing confidence that a new chapter is possible
Microscope icon

More than 50% report flakes + irritation noticeably improved by week 2*

Peace Returns

Days 11–21

  • Scalp feels healthier between washes
  • "Hot spots" and flare-ups become less reactive
  • Consistent calm replaces the cycle of flare → relief → flare
  • You're wearing darker shirts again with confidence

Consistent Calm

Days 28+

  • Most folks feel soothed, comfortable, and buildup-free
  • Skin feels calmer than it has in years
  • New routine becomes a habit of self-love and peace
  • You forget what it felt like to worry about your scalp

After 28 days, 92% of clinical trial participants reported fewer flakes, less irritation, and calmer, more peaceful skin.*

Timeline FAQs

Here are the most common questions we hear in the first 30 days of this transformation, plus simple ways to support your skin through each stage.

Is it normal to have temporary flaking or scaling?

Yes. As your scalp adjusts to your new routine, you may notice flakes loosening, mild scaling, or shedding that looks a little worse before it looks better. This is often your skin clearing away buildup and typically improves within 1–3 weeks of consistent use.

Tips to support your scalp:

Use a scalp scrubber gently in the shower to lift flakes.

Wash thoroughly with Scalp Therapy Shampoo to remove loosened buildup.

My serum stings... should I stop using it?

A mild sting, tingle, or warm sensation is common, especially when skin is already inflamed or irritated. If the sensation fades within a few minutes and doesn't feel like burning, you can usually continue using it.

If it feels too strong: Rinse with cool water. Dilute the serum 1:1 with purified water. Apply a thinner layer or use it every other night.

For extra sensitive skin or babies, consider Cradle Calm as a gentler option.

If your skin becomes very painful or reactive, stop use and check with a healthcare provider.

The good news: Many people (including our founders) have shared that the sting reduces or goes away over time as your skin barrier becomes healthier.

Is it normal to see extra redness or sensitivity when I start?

Yes. Some people experience temporary redness, mild irritation, or skin that feels a little more "awake" or touchy as they adjust. This often happens when antifungal and barrier-supportive ingredients begin working. Many people find sensitivity decreases as their barrier strengthens.

To support your skin:

  • Use Purifying Facial Cleanser and Scalp Therapy Shampoo as directed.
  • Avoid harsh sulfates, strong synthetic fragrance, and rich oils.
  • Add gentle hydration with the Malassezia Moisturizer and MCT Scalp Moisturizer.

Does Vitamin C cause purging?

Vitamin C itself isn't known to cause purging. What most people think of as "purging" is typically triggered by active exfoliants (like AHAs/BHAs) or retinoids, which can speed up skin turnover.

If you're using those types of products in your routine (especially while introducing something new) it's common to notice temporary breakouts, increased flakiness, or a bit of extra sensitivity as your skin adjusts.

Vitamin C can sometimes make this adjustment period feel more noticeable because it supports brightness and barrier recovery, but it isn't the root cause. If your skin feels overstimulated, simply reduce how often you use the stronger actives while your skin settles.

I'm still flaking even though I'm using Dermazen. How do I know what's causing it?

The most common reason is another product in your routine that's feeding Malassezia. It could be oils, butters, or waxes in shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, makeup removers, or styling products. Check your products for:

  • oils (coconut, castor, jojoba, almond, etc.)
  • butters (shea, cocoa)
  • waxes (beeswax)
  • strong fragrance

If you find any, remove them from your routine if possible and see if your skin calms down.

Ingredients to Avoid

Did you know some ingredients will inflame your skin and trigger flare-ups?

What you avoid in your skincare routine is just as important as what you include.

We've heard from several members of the Dermazen community who were using our products for the first time, but weren't seeing complete relief.

After we asked about their skincare routine, it turned out they were using other products like bar soaps or creams made with fungus-feeding oils.

Once they removed the unsafe products from their routine, their flare-ups went away and their skin looked better than ever.

Ingredients to avoid

Oils: Almost every oil on the planet contains fatty acids that will feed the Malassezia fungus. This includes coconut, castor, almond, jojoba, and many more. To learn more about the science behind which oils feed the fungus and why, visit dermazen.co/oils.

Safe oils
Checkmark

The only safe oils are squalane and MCT (without lauric acid).

Waxes and Butters: This includes beeswax, shea butter, cocoa butter, and more. These ingredients contain the same fungus-feeding fatty acids as most oils.

Note icon

NOTE:

Oils, waxes, and butters only need to be avoided on areas where you experience symptoms of Malassezia fungus, which usually occur around the face, scalp, and ears. So if you don't get fungal symptoms on your hands, it's perfectly alright to use a hand lotion with beeswax or coconut oil.

But these ingredients below should be avoided as often as possible across your body.

Sulfates: These common lathering agents in beauty products remove essential moisture from your hair and skin, damage your skin barrier, and make your skin more sensitive to irritation. They also pose a risk to aquatic life and ecosystems when they enter our waterways. They can be harmful for you and the environment.

Parabens: Some studies suggest these synthetic preservatives can act like weak hormones and may disrupt the body's normal hormone balance. Because human evidence is still limited and mixed, scientists consider parabens a possible health concern but say more research is needed before concluding that everyday exposure can cause harm.

Phthalates: Several studies suggest phthalates can interfere with hormones in the body and are linked with problems like fertility issues, changes in child development, and higher risks of conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Because the evidence is still developing, many public health experts treat phthalates as chemicals of concern and recommend limiting exposure where possible, especially during pregnancy and childhood.

Fragrances: Synthetic fragrances in personal care and household products can release airborne chemicals that may trigger skin irritation, allergies, headaches, or breathing problems, especially for people with asthma or chemical sensitivities.

Some commonly used fragrance chemicals have been identified as potential endocrine disruptors, neurotoxicants, or carcinogens, so researchers and regulatory experts consider them "ingredients of concern" and are calling for more transparency and safety data.

Checkmark

We suggest using products that are scent-free or scented with natural sources like essential oils or hydrosols.

Essential oils don't contain any fatty acids so they don't promote Malassezia growth. However, many essential oils used in skincare products are made with carrier oils like jojoba which feed Malassezia fungus. We make sure every essential oil we use is 100% pure without carrier oils.

How to Combine Products

How to Combine Products

The secret to keeping your skin peaceful is to think of your skincare like a team where every product plays a vital role.

One product can help, but the real magic happens when you combine these formulas.

Scalp Protocol

The ideal order for scalp care is more flexible since you might prefer to wash your hair at night, in the morning, or only once or twice each week (or less often for textured hair).

Your unique scalp care routine might require more customization than your facial care.

Use the following toggle button to reveal the general rule of thumb, depending on if you have textured hair or straight/wavy hair:

Serum: Apply the serum and massage it into your scalp thoroughly the night before (or at least two hours before) you plan to wash your hair - even if that is every week or two.

Moisturize: Following up with MCT Scalp Moisturizer right away, seals in the benefits of the serum, hydrates your scalp, prevents excess oil, and stimulates new hair growth.

Optional Leave-In: Some folks with textured hair use the serum and scalp moisturizer as leave-in products, since the holistic ingredients will naturally absorb into your scalp for lasting relief. Everyone is different, so we recommend trying these products as leave-ins to see how they work with your hairstyle.

Wash / Rinse: When it's time to wash your hair, using the Scalp Therapy Shampoo will remove the MCT moisturizer, oil from your scalp, dirt, and fungus while refreshing your scalp, nourishing your hair, and supporting new hair growth. While the MCT moisturizer will need a shampoo in order to be washed out, the serum can be rinsed out with water either with a full rinse or with a wet washcloth in between braids across the scalp.

Serum: Applying the serum before bed soothes your scalp by focusing on the root cause of your condition, disrupting the biofilm, clearing away fungus, and soothing your skin. If you shower at night, make sure the serum soaks into your scalp for at least two hours before washing it out.

Moisturize: Following up with MCT moisturizer right away, seals in the benefits of the serum, hydrates your scalp, prevents excess oil, and stimulates new hair growth.

Cleanse: Washing with the shampoo (in the morning or after 2+ hours) removes the dried serum, MCT moisturizer, oil from your scalp, dirt, and fungus while refreshing your scalp, nourishing your hair, and supporting new hair growth.

Scalp FAQs

My scalp looks worse before it gets better. Is that normal?

Yes. As products begin loosening buildup and addressing Malassezia-related concerns, flakes may lift more visibly and areas may appear redder or more active. This is often part of recalibrating your scalp environment and typically settles within 1–3 weeks.

To support your scalp:

  • Use a scalp scrubber gently to lift flakes.
  • Rinse well with Scalp Therapy Shampoo.
  • Stay consistent instead of stopping and restarting.

Is it normal to still see flakes while using Dermazen?

Yes. Flakes can continue to appear when:

  • Buildup is loosening
  • The skin barrier is recalibrating
  • Other products in your routine may still be feeding Malassezia

Staying consistent and removing incompatible products usually creates clearer, calmer results with time.

My hair feels dry, should I use the Nourishing Conditioner or the MCT Scalp Moisturizer?

These two products serve different purposes.

  • Nourishing Conditioner: Best to prevent dry, rough, or brittle hair. Apply to mid-lengths and ends for softness and shine.
  • MCT Scalp Moisturizer: Best for a tight, dry, or uncomfortable scalp. After you rise or at least two hours before washing.

You can use both: conditioner for hair, MCT for scalp.

Face Protocol

To soothe your face, follow the mantra: cleanse, serum, moisturize.

Cleanse: Starting with the gentle cleanser sweeps away dirt, oil, and fungus, creating a blank canvas for the other formulas to support your skin while also giving relief from irritation.

Serum: Applying the serum soothes your skin by focusing on the root cause of your condition, disrupting the biofilm, clearing away fungus, and soothing your skin.

Moisturize: Finishing with the moisturizer will seal in the serum's benefits while hydrating your skin, preventing excess oil, and protecting your skin barrier.

We recommend following these steps before bed so the ingredients can absorb into your skin before applying makeup (if that's part of your daily routine), but this ritual works just as well at the start of your day.

We recommend using our serum and cleansing just once per day, using those products too often can be too drying for some skin types. We do encourage using our moisturizer twice a day for glowing skin.

Face FAQs

My skin feels tight or dry after cleansing. What should I adjust?

This usually means your barrier needs more hydration. Make sure you're not over-cleansing (once daily is enough for most people). Follow with the Soothing Malassezia Moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp.

I'm still seeing redness on my face, how do I know if it's sensitivity or a flare-up?

  • Sensitivity feels warm or tingly and usually improves with gentle moisturizer and reducing or taking a break from actives.
  • A flare-up tends to show flaking, itching, or a "greasy-but-dry" feeling.

If your routine is already Malassezia Safe, consistency usually brings things back to calm within a couple of weeks.

Peaceful Skin System

This complete bundle has everything you need to calm your moody skin, nourish your hair, and enhance your natural glow.

MCT Scalp Moisturizer

For Best Results Add: MCT Scalp Moisturizer †

Not an official part of the Peaceful Skin System but if you choose to add it to your routine (which we recommend), this would be the perfect time to apply it.

Wash out in morning icon WASH OUT IN THE MORNING
Scalp Therapy Shampoo

Step 4 Shampoo (Scalp)

Scalp Therapy Shampoo Remove dried serum, dirt, oil, and fungus while nourishing and thickening your hair.

Nourishing Conditioner

For Best Results: Add Nourishing Conditioner †

Detangle, strengthen, and soften your hair while keeping your scalp fresh and comfortable.

Again, not an official part of the Peaceful Skin System but if you use a conditioner, we strongly suggest adding ours to your routine since other conditioners contain ingredients that feed Malassezia yeast.

Prefer to shower at night? Simply apply the serum to your scalp at least one hour before showering so it can absorb fully.

Average time: less than 3 minutes extra per day.

Peaceful Skin System FAQs

My skin feels irritated after using the cloths, should I stop?

Many people notice some relief within 1–2 weeks when using their products daily and keeping the rest of their routine Malassezia Safe. Full visible improvement often takes 4–6 weeks, depending on the severity and how long symptoms have been present. Our clinical trial* showed that about 50% of participants saw fewer flakes and irritation by the second week. And 92% saw improvement by the end of the fourth week.

For best tracking:

  • Take before photos.
  • Compare at 2 weeks and 4 weeks.
  • Look for progress, not perfection.

What if my progress feels slow?

Slow progress usually means one of these things:

  • Something in your routine (other than Dermazen) still contains oils or butters feeding Malassezia
  • You're not applying consistently enough (once a day is recommended)
  • Your body is asking for care in other areas (hydration, sleep, lowering stress, etc.)
  • Your skin just needs more time (think of it like a garden, not a light switch)

Most people who remove Malassezia-feeding products and stay consistent notice clear improvement by week 4–6.
