For over a decade, I battled relentless seborrheic dermatitis— itching, redness, flakes, and frustration that refused to go away. I tried everything: dermatologist prescriptions, drugstore shelves, “natural” solutions with beautiful labels and empty promises. Nothing helped. Most things made it worse.
I was exhausted. Embarrassed. And honestly, I was starting to lose hope.
So I did what anyone would do: I started researching obsessively. That’s when I stumbled on the real culprit behind so many skin issues like mine— a fungus called Malassezia. It feeds on common oils, hides behind a protective biofilm, and makes most treatments totally useless.
Once I saw this clearly, everything changed. I stopped trying to “moisturize more” and started designing a simple 3-step approach that actually made sense:
Disrupt the biofilm so the fungus isn’t protected
Clear away signs of fungus using clean, natural ingredients
Soothe and hydrate without feeding the problem
I ordered the raw ingredients online and started mixing my own formula in my apartment. The very first version of what would later become our Calming Seborrheic Serum—a key formulation in the Face Relief System.
Within days, my skin changed. No itching. No redness. No flakes. No more hiding.
I immediately shared the formula on Reddit and in Facebook groups, hoping others would try it. But no one wanted to buy ten separate ingredients and DIY their own serum. That’s when I realized: if I wanted to help more people, I’d have to make it for them.
So I started giving out samples. The feedback was almost unbelievable. People told me it helped more than anything they’d ever tried. They wanted more. They wanted it bottled.
That’s when the idea for Dermazen was born.
I reached out to my old friend and former coworker Niels—just to see if he knew anyone in cosmetic manufacturing. His reply?
“Uhh Austin I’m pretty sure I have the same condition!?”

Our story
I was frustrated and confused. For over ten years, I’d been battling itchy, inflamed skin with no relief. Seborrheic dermatitis was making it hard to even look in the mirror, let alone show up confidently for my life. I was desperate.
No one had answers. Not the dermatologists. Not the drugstore aisles. Not the “natural” cures that promised more than they delivered. Every product either made things worse or barely covered it up.
Driven by equal parts hope and desperation, I started studying the root cause of my symptoms—and that’s when everything shifted. I discovered the role of Malassezia, a fungus that feeds on most oils and hides behind a stubborn biofilm that blocks treatments from working.
So I decided to make something new—something that disrupted the biofilm shield, reversed the spread of Malassezia, and soothed moody skin without feeding the fungus. I started crafting my own remedy ordering ingredients in bulk online. This was the earliest version of our Calming Seborrheic Serum (which my co-founder, Niels, later helped me perfect). Within days, my skin was clearer than ever. No flakes. No itching. No redness. No embarrassment. For the first time in a decade, I felt relief—and hope.
Immediately, I posted the ingredients on Reddit and in Facebook groups for seborrheic dermatitis, hoping someone would whip up the formula and find the same success that I did. No one wanted to take a chance to order the ingredients and make it themselves. That's when I realized, in order to help more people, I would have to do the work for them.

As fate would have it, he said, “I’m pretty sure I actually have the same condition.” (Only about 5% of people do.) I sent him the original formula. And his skin was finally peaceful. He was blown away—and immediately wanted to join the mission.
From there, we reached out to a few more friends and colleagues who shared our passion for clean yet effective solutions—including Shane, who’s now our head of digital strategy. Our leadership team came together organically, united by a shared belief that people deserve peaceful skin and peace of mind.
Today, Dermazen exists to educate and empower anyone struggling with seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, fungal acne, and other malassezia-triggered skin issues.
